Our Thesis

Betalab is launching a $10 million growth-stage corporate venture fund to back fintech infrastructure, embedded finance, and healthtech companies across Sub Saharan Africa based on its extensive regulatory access across 11 markets, extensive agent distribution network, proprietary insurance data and analytics, and integrated capital platform that accelerates portfolio company market entry, reduces operational friction, and unlocks previously inaccessible customer segments.

Our Focus:

1. Financial Services Infrastructure — African markets remain highly fragmented with inefficient payment systems, credit infrastructure, and risk assessment capabilities. Startups addressing these fundamental infrastructure gaps create platform-level value that compounds across multiple use cases.
2. Embedded Finance and Insurance — The future of financial services lies in embedding products within existing customer journeys rather than standalone applications. This approach increases adoption rates, reduces customer acquisition costs, and creates stickier customer relationships.
3. Healthcare Technology and Wellness — Healthcare represents Africa's most significant protection gap and highest growth opportunity. Health insurance penetration remains below 5% in most markets, while healthcare financing needs continue to grow. Technology can bridge this gap through telemedicine, health financing, and preventive care solutions.
